Antique hanging paper scroll. China. Heigth 68.8". Width 26,5" (ca. 175 x 68, 5 cm). Wooden roller ends. Good condition.

Hand painted calligraphic paper scroll. White lettering on black ink subsurface.with unidentified artist seal. Bordered with floral grey silk on paper. - Zhang Ji was a chinese poet. He was born about 712 in Xiangyang in the Tang-Dynasty. The Poem you can read on the paper scroll is named "A Night-mooring near Maple Bridge". It was translated by Witter Bynner and references the Maple Bridge, in Suzhou near the Hanshan Temple and its bells, which became famous because of this poem. Every chinese school-child knows this poem. The poem is still popularly read in China, Japan and Korea. It is part of the primary school curriculum in both China and Japan. The calligraphy is propably brushed by Qing Dynasty calligrapher Yu Yue (1821-1901).
